Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure done to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breasts.

Breast Augmentation is also known as breast implant surgery, breast enlargement, mammoplasty enlargement or augmentation mammoplasty.

The aim of breast augmentation is to enhance the profile of the bust. It is a common surgery, done by women who are dissatisfied with their natural breast size or to restore volume and shape in women whose breasts are sagging or have lost firmness, perhaps due to weight loss or after pregnancy. It is also done to achieve symmetry when breasts are disproportionate in size and shape due to congenital defects or after surgery.

The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you are physically healthy and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate.

During the consultation it will be determined which size and shape of a breast implant will best suit your expectations. The common standard is that a breast implant should not exceed a growth of two cup sizes.

Breast implants can be placed in two general locations, submuscular (under the pectoral muscle) or subglandular (under breast tissue).

About Breast Implants

A breast implant is a medical device used to enlarge the size of a woman's breasts . Breast implants contain an outer silicone shell that contains a filler material, which provides the implant its size and shape. The filler material used in breast implants may be saline (salt water) or silicone. Silicone breast implants provide the most natural look and feel.

Silicone is commonly found in a variety of consumer products and was first used in breast implants in the early 1960s. Saline is a salt-water solution that is similar to the fluid that makes up the majority of the human body.

The silicone filler is the softest and most natural feeling implant available. It is less prone to wrinkling and feels more natural than saline implants.

Breast implants come in different shapes and sizes. They may be round or anatomical, conforming to the natural shape of the breast.

The size of a breast implant is measured in cubic centimeters (cc/ml) based on the volume of the saline or silicone filler. Breast implants vary both by filler and in size, but there are additional features to consider:

Texture: the implant shell may be smooth or textured

Shape: the implant may have a round or anatomic profile

Profile: the implant may have a low, medium or high projection

Diameter: the width of the implant measured across its base

Breast implants do not cause breast cancer.
