Breast Reduction Complications

All operations carry risks. A surgical complication is defined as any undesirable result of surgery. A few of the more common problems are listed below.

One of the biggest side effects of a breast lift is scarring , as this surgery leaves visible scars, although they are hidden under regular bras.

After the operation, the skin over the nipples and breasts may feel numb or extra sensitive but this usually improves after six months or so.

In rare cases, body fluid ( seroma ) or blood clots ( hematoma ) can build up underneath the skin. Often this needs treatment using a needle and syringe, or by a small second operation.

There is a small risk of infection of the wound, which may lead to a wound and delayed healing. This is much more likely in smokers, which is why you should stop smoking at least two weeks before and after the operation.

Cosmetic problems such as mild asymmetry, unanticipated shape or scar deformity may occur.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding may have significant and unpredictable effects on the size and shape of your breasts with surgical breast reduction. Reduction by liposuction avoids any such potential complications.

You will be made to wear a pressure garment that resembles a sports bra for at least 4 - 6 weeks. This is to improve blood circulation, minimize swelling, flush potentially harmful fluids out of the body and support your new bustline.

Sleeping on the stomach should be avoided for at least two weeks. In fact, the proper sleeping position should be on your back propped up and somewhat elevated.

The first week is somewhat troublesome, with swelling and tenderness of the bust, but this resolves soon after.
