Breast Procedures

1. Breast Lift

If you have breasts that just don’t have the same kind of firmness and shape anymore, due to weight loss, pregnancy or age, don’t be upset. Breast lift surgery can ease your problems and restore your peace of mind.

Breast lift is a surgical procedure done to return the breasts to a more youthful and perky shape and position. Breast Lift is also known as mastopexy, and may be combined with other procedures on the breast such as breast augmentation (augmentation mastopexy) or breast reduction (reduction mastopexy).

The aim of mastopexy is to restore the proportion of the bust by increasing the elevation of the breasts, bringing the nipples to a higher position, and reducing the size of the areolae . It is also done to achieve symmetry when breasts are disproportionate in size and shape due to congenital defects or after surgery.

2. Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure done to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts.

Breast Augmentation is also known as breast implant surgery, breast enlargement, mammoplasty enlargement or augmentation mammoplasty.

The aim of breast augmentation is to enhance the profile of the bust. It is a common surgery, done by women who are dissatisfied with their natural breast size or to restore volume and shape in women whose breasts are sagging or have lost firmness, perhaps due to weight loss or after pregnancy. It is also done to achieve symmetry when breasts are disproportionate in size and shape due to congenital defects or after surgery.

The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way they look. If you are physically healthy and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate.

During the consultation it will be determined which size and shape of a breast implant will best suit your expectations. The common standard is that breast augmentation should not exceed a growth of two cup sizes.

Breast implants are the commonest way of augmentation.

About Breast Implants
A breast implant is a medical device used to enlarge the size of a woman’s breasts . Breast implants contain an outer silicone shell that contains a filler material, which provides the implant its size and shape. The filler material used in breast implants may be saline (salt water) or silicone. Silicone breast implants provide the most natural look and feel.

Silicone is commonly found in a variety of consumer products and was first used in breast implants in the early 1960s. Saline is a salt-water solution that is similar to the fluid that makes up the majority of the human body.

The silicone filler is the softest and most natural feeling implant available. It is less prone to wrinkling and feels more natural than saline implants.

Breast implants come in different shapes and sizes. They may be round or anatomical, conforming to the natural shape of the breast.

The size of a breast implant is measured in cubic centimeters (cc/ml) based on the volume of the saline or silicone filler. Breast implants vary both by filler and in size, but there are additional features to consider:

Texture: the implant shell may be smooth or textured

Shape: the implant may have a round or anatomic profile

Profile: the implant may have a low, medium or high projection

Diameter: the width of the implant measured across its base

Breast implants do not cause breast cancer. The Implants can be placed in two general locations, submuscular (under the pectoral muscle) or subglandular (under breast tissue).

Fat Grafting
Fat grafting for breast augmentation has been performed for many years, but has not seen much success. However, with refinements of technique and the advent of new technology, more surgeons and patients are turning to autologous (one’s own) fat for breast augmentation. Using Stem Cells also helps the results to be even better and more long-lasting than before. The pain and complications after fat grafting are much less than with Implants, and the feel is much more natural. As a bonus, you get fat removed from some other areas of your body!

3. Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)

If you feel that your breasts are too large and their weight is causing physical problems to your neck, back, shoulder, circulation, or even breathing problems, you may be a candidate for a breast reduction. The weight may also cause discomfort as a result of bra straps cutting into or irritating the skin. Even if physical discomfort is not a problem, you may feel awkward and self- conscious with the large size of your breasts in proportion to the rest of your body, leading to restriction of your physical activity or the way you dress.

Breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty is a surgical procedure done to give you smaller, lighter, and firmer breasts. You can also reduce the size of and change the shape of the areola or nipples. It may be combined with other procedures on the breast such as breast lift (reduction mastopexy).

The aim of reduction mammoplasty is to restore the proportion of the bust by decreasing the size of the breasts, bringing the nipples to a higher position, and reducing the size of the areolae . It is also done to achieve symmetry when breasts are disproportionate in size and shape due to congenital defects or after surgery.

Breast reduction surgery can be performed at any age, but waiting until breast development is complete is recommended. It is not recommended for women who desire to breastfeed.

It is therefore ideal for young women who wish to breastfeed their children in the future.

4. Breast Reconstruction

The loss of a breast to cancer, trauma or disease is a very traumatic one. Besides the physical disfiguration there is a sense of psychological distress and trauma.

Breast reconstruction is surgery to reconstruct the breast tissue, addressing your physical and mental problems.

There are many different approaches that vary according to the type of mastectomy that was performed, and to the condition of the breast skin.

In some cases, reconstruction is achieved with an implant alone, in others using your own skin and tissues from near and distant areas.

Another technique involves placement of a tissue expander below the chest muscle to create a ‘pocket’ to accommodate an implant later on.

Surgery to reconstruct the nipple and areola can also be performed.

The newly created breast cannot exactly match the other breast. But the results do provide a great improvement and considerable emotional and psychological benefits.

5. Inverted Nipples

Inversion of the nipples is a relatively common condition, which may be embarrassing you if just one side is affected. This results in asymmetry since the inverted nipple does not respond to cold weather or stimulation. You may be self-conscious about this especially in beachwear or swim wear. It is also difficult to breast-feed with an inverted nipple.

The nipples are connected to the underlying breast tissue by means of tiny tubes called ducts. Nipple inversion occurs when these ducts are too short and pull the nipple inwards. It is important for the entire breast to be examined carefully for nipple inversion of recent onset may be a sign of an underlying cancer.

Correction of inverted nipples is usually done under local anaesthesia as a day care surgery. A small incision is made just below the nipple and the shortened ducts are divided. The nipple is pulled out and held in place with a dissolving suture which is placed under the skin. A small dressing is applied which is removed the following day.

There may be slight bruising or swelling and tenderness at the site of surgery, which resolves within a few days.

Patients can return to work within 2 – 3 days.

The complications that can occur are mild bleeding, blood clot formation and infection. There may be a loss of sensation in the nipple and breast-feeding may not be possible. Inversion of the nipple may also recur.

VASER Liposelection usually means that the patient can start wearing strappy clothing, bathing suits, and dresses without the embarrassment of ugly arms.
